- Make sure your gutters and downspouts are free of leaves and debris. They can't do their job if they're blocked!
- Have your roof checked for leaks and repair any loose shingles before they cause larger problems.
- Make sure your sump pump is working (if you have one).
- Install a chimney cap, if needed.
- Correct any grading issues you've noticed in the past to prevent repeat flooding.
- Learn how to shut off your power and water main.
- Create an emergency contact list, including numbers for your insurance agent, preferred emergency plumber and disaster restoration company.
Just before the storm:
- Secure any lawn furniture, toys, potted plants, gardening tools or other loose items in your yard. If they become airborne, they could be lost or damaged, or cause damage to your siding and windows. Don't forget the trash can and recycling bin!
- Park your vehicles, including bikes, in the garage or under the carport. If you don't have an enclosed garage, be sure to chain your bike to something secure.
- Close all the windows and doors, including the garage door. It may sound obvious, but it's easy to overlook.
- If you have them (and the storm warrants them) secure the storm shutters, roof clips and garage door brace.
