How to Save Water and Energy for Earth Day
April 22 is Earth Day, a time to focus on the individual and collective impact we have on our environment and how we can make that impact a positive one. As homeowners, there are simple changes we can make in our everyday lives to reduce our energy consumption, save water, and improve the world around us.
Change #1: Go tankless.
A tankless water heater saves energy because it heats water on demand, rather than heating up an entire tank of water. They’re not for everyone, though. Go here to see if a tankless water heater would be right for you.
Change #2: Research your options.
It may be time to replace your hot water heater. Maybe you keep running out of hot water. Maybe your heater is old and failing. Whatever the reason, research the right choice for you. Energystar.gov offers ways to upgrade your heater and save money, access to articles on energy-efficient models, and water heater FAQs.
Change #3: Use tap water, not bottled.
Study after study has shown that in most cases bottled water is no cleaner or safer than tap water. Unrecycled plastic bottles clog our landfills, litter our streets and waterways, and cost considerably more than tap water. See why you should put down the bottle and open up the tap.
Change #4: Conserve water.
While Earth Day is April 22, World Water Day, as designated by the United Nations General Assembly, took place exactly one month ago on March 22. We provided a number of ways to save water, including changing your habits, fixing leaks, and calculating your water footprint. Learn more.
