Dual-Fuel HVAC System
A dual-fuel HVAC system is an electric heat pump and full-sized gas furnace all rolled into one. In areas of the country where temperatures are typically above freezing—and have low electricity rates—a heat pump is generally the most efficient way to heat your home. In those few instances when the temperature drops below freezing, the furnace kicks in to provide more heat more economically. By combining the two, you can have the benefits of both systems.
The benefits of dual-fuel
If you make the decision to go with a dual-fuel HVAC system, you should be informed about what you’re getting. Here’s what you can expect with dual-fuel:
- If the outside temperature is well above freezing, an electric heat pump can usually find enough ambient heat in the air to warm your home.
- The system will automatically switch to the furnace at a set temperature to maintain your comfort.
- In dual-fuel systems, the heat pump and the furnace do not run at the same time in order to prevent damage to each system.
- Dual-fuel HVAC systems generally cost more than conventional heating and cooling systems. You're essentially getting two systems in one.
- The amount you'll save on heating costs in the coming years can more than make up the difference you spend on equipment and installation.
